چکیده
Abstract The objective of this research is to test the feasibility a large-scale application fertilizer drawn forward osmosis using concentrated hydroponic nutrient solution as draw solution. This will help mitigate ever-growing issue freshwater resources, by providing an alternative source for agriculture. method can then be used grow crops hydroponically in arid regions that have access both brackish groundwater and freshwater. was prepared dissolving industrial-grade salts dechlorinated tap water tested (DS) on pilot-scale membrane module. feed (FS) process NaCl dissolved water, 10 g/L (10% w/w) concentration represent salinity level groundwater. performance measured based flux, recovery, specific solute salt rejection. Two basins were utilized lettuce. first basin grown commercial solution, while other diluted from pilot-scale. growth lettuce compared wet dry weights stem, percent reduction weight drying, total length, stem ratio between lengths. Results showed average flux found 1.11 L/m 2 /hr (LMH), it 7.7 LMH previous bench-scale; line with experiments conducted bench-scale osmosis. highest value reverse 7.48 g/m /h K + ion, which also comparable results obtained bench-scale. Finally, rejection high, lowest 90.7%, indicating high selectivity against ions. resultant being 16.23% less terms than lettuce, 27.18% length. decrease size attributed macro- micro-nutrients Resh Florida/California not optimized species (loose leaf). It concluded valid osmosis, mitigates some drawbacks increases desalination technology. Graphical abstract

Blended fertilizers as draw solutions for fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination.
In fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) desalination, the final nutrient concentration (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK)) in the product water is essential for direct fertigation and to avoid over fertilization. Our study with 11 selected fertilizers indicate that blending of two or more single fertilizers as draw solution (DS) can achieve significantly lower nutrient concentration in t...
متن کاملPotential of Vertical Hydroponic Agriculture in Mexico
In 2050, Mexico’s population will reach 150 million people, about 80% of whom will likely live in urban centers. This increase in population will necessitate increased food production in the country. The lands classified as drylands in Mexico occupy approximately 101.5 million hectares, or just over half the territory, limiting the potential for agricultural expansion. In addition to the proble...
متن کاملHydroponic Production of Purslane as a Sodium-removing Vegetable in NaCl-rich Nutrient Solution
To evaluate the potential of producing purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) as a sodium (Na)-removing vegetable hydroponically at moderate NaCl salinity, two cultivars (Green and Golden) were grown in solutions with added 0, 6, 8, and 10 mM NaCl (the actual Na concentrations ’2, 8, 10, and 12 mM, respectively). At harvest, 26 days after transplanting, apparent growth and biomass accumulation were n...

Among factors affecting hydroponic production systems, the nutrient solution is considered to be one of the most important determining factors of crop yield and quality. This chapter aims to explain aspects related to plant nutrition and its effects on production of hydroponic crops, considering basic aspects such as nutrient solutions and their development through the years; components of nutr...
متن کاملExploration of polyepoxysuccinic acid as a novel draw solution in the forward osmosis process
Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) is a green corrosion scale inhibitor. When PESA is used for wastewater desalination in the forward osmosis (FO) process, the diluted PESA solution could be used for cooling systems. In our investigation, the effects of membrane orientation, temperature and flow rate on FO performance are studied using PESA as a draw solute. The results show that the effect of tempe...
